Feel the Rhyme

I was addressed by one of my favored students last week:

"Mr. C, do you like to write?" "I said, "Yes actually I do." He asked, "Poetry?" I answered with, "Yeah... I've dabbled in a little poetry." After I explained what dabbled meant, he continued, "Cool, well feel the rhyme Mr. C."  "What?" I asked. He said, "Come up with four words that rhyme with feel and write a poem. The first line has to be this: Using these words that rhyme will save me time to share my _________ of which I feel." He added, "Insert a feeling in the blank." I simply retorted, "How 'bout you give me four words and I'll use them." He said, "Ok, but you have to use them in the order I give them to you." As if it wasn't hard enough... After a short search on the internet, he brought to me these four words: steel, real, deal, and heal.

So, honestly, I thought this was going to be really difficult, but a student challenged me to use them to try and create a little poem, so I had to prove to him that I knew what I was doing. I told the student I wouldn't share the poem with him until the last day of school, because I didn't know if he was trying to get me to do an assignment for him. Haha! Anyway, here it is. (I added the homophone of steel: steal. We'll see how he feels about me adding a word...)

Using these words that rhyme will save me time to share my love of which I feel.
This love I share comes from a source that's rare, from a true man of steel.
This man is not fiction; however, doesn't fall within the diction of what is considered real.
This source doesn't wear tights and he faces fights that aren't the same as the ones Lex may deal.
But his strength overcomes the provoked and revives the ones the enemy has choked and seems to steal.
His love returns these lost souls and mends the pain in which the enemy holds; a true love that can heal.

This poem speaks of two well-known heroes: Superman, a DC Comic book superhero; and Jesus Christ, the savior of the World! Clearly, Superman is a fictional character; however, Jesus, although some may think that he is a fictional character, to followers of Christ (Christians), Jesus is as real as you and me. This poem talks about how many look at the "Man of Steel" as a superhero and by definition in the comic book world, he is, but how many view Jesus Christ as "the true man of steel"? You see Jesus gave his life to save the world, so, at first, people's argument would be superheroes don't die... which I am sure in the comic book universe there have to be some exceptions, but I am honestly not sure.... None the less, Jesus resurrected, making him, exceptionally, super! A superhero is defined by Webster as a fictional hero having extraordinary or superhuman powers; also: an exceptionally skillful or successful person. Obviously, Superman falls in this category, but does Jesus, minus the fictional part? Think about it... Jesus performed many, what Christians call, miracles, now a miracle is a surprising and welcome event that is not explicable by natural or scientific laws and is considered to be divine. Thor was a "god" so his lightning control and super strength would be considered divine... is Thor a superhero? In my beliefs, Jesus's definitive action of giving his life and the resurrection would definitely be something any superhero in the DC and Marvel universes would do.

In comparing the two, I stated in the poem, along with the fact that Jesus doesn't wear tights, that he doesn't necessarily face altercations that coincide with the ones that Lex Luther brings to the table in the Superman series; however, he does face his own demons and the demons of the world. Like I said, he was killed for our sins, not his own. Like Superman, Jesus faced contention for the people's sake. He fought for us and protected our souls. Superhero material? Also, think about Superman... I know that he is actually an alien and comes from a different planet, but remember Jesus's birth? He was conceived by the Holy Spirit through the Virgin Mary and was made man. In the eyes of the people who actually believed this during that time, wouldn't you think that they would look at this baby as either a miracle or a being that we would define as an alien?

Alien - A denoted being from another world.

Now, as the poem continues, I refer to "the provoked" and "the enemy". You see, in our lives, even ourselves, people face circumstances that may provoke them to do "evil" things. Now, there can easily be an argument that these "evil" things are all different... some commit worse evil than others. This is mostly because of our world... Our society has created different levels of consequences for acts of "evil" or rule breaking... but in the eyes of Jesus and God these evil things (sins) are all exactly that, sins, and they all slowly separate us from God... Unless, we give them up to the Lord. Jesus already saved us from our sin, but we have to come to a realization that these sins are separating us from him, and until we lay them at the cross (the place where Jesus died, foreshadowing the death of all sin) we will not have a real relationship with Him because we are... Separated from him. We have always had a choice, that was a gift God insisted on giving us, because he wants a real relationship with us. He wants us to choose Him. He could, in the snap of his fingers, make us "love" him, but... Would that be love? Now, for the enemy, I'm not going to argue with anyone about demons and the devil and all that. That's your decision to believe in those beings, but I think we can all agree that there is an actual enemy out there. I mean think about everything in the world; everything has an opposite. A few examples include life and death, love and hate (or selfishness), good and evil, light and dark, hot and cold. These are just a few examples, but still prove my point. Pretty much everything I can think of has an opposite, and a lot of these things are defined by their opposites. Think about love, what would love be if there wasn't hate or selfishness? What would good be if there wasn't evil? It would be all we know, so there wouldn't be good or love it would just be the way it is. Which sounds great and all, but what would be the point of all this? Why would we be in existence? Just so God could use us as puppets? Drones to do his will? So, all of that being said, choice, which is a "good" thing, gives us the ability to, obviously choose our path, we can choose to love, choose to follow Christ, choose to be good, choose to be who we were meant to be... or just the opposite... The truth is... if your not in a relationship with God, "the enemy" will provoke you to choose the opposite; fortunately, however, Jesus's strength overcomes the provoked and said enemy and His love can truly heal the hurt and mend the brokenhearted.

This little "assignment" if you will, was an awesome experience for me. Who would've thought that just by a random question and challenge brought to me by a high school student would be so thought provoking?! Awesome!

Everyone, I challenge you, feel the rhyme!

Remember...

Today is a day to remember the fallen, to cherish their sacrifices, and to recognize their stand for our beliefs. Also a time to remember the ones who lost a soldier... who sacrificed their wants, desires, and dreams when sending their husband, wife, father, mother, or child to fight for the freedoms we constantly take advantage of. A day to remember the hope these soldiers brought and still bring to our nation. The physical, emotional, and even fatal battle they endured so their heroism could live on in us: the ones they humbly protected and served. This is a day to remember the ones we love who gave everything for us... Remember.

Determination or Failure | Left Unsaid

Things on my mind tend to be left unsaid. I have failed to speak my mind and share my thoughts time and time again. I have become a failure. You see, the voice of a failure speaks softly and drowns out the truth within its words or doesn't speak at all. A failure is not a person, but a choice. A failure is referred to as an “it” for that exact reason: its a choice. A person chooses to fail. In the contrary however, if a person pushes him or herself to succeed, said person will do just that. In time we try and try and when we don’t “succeed” the way we have been taught in this life to “succeed,” we look into the mirror and simply say, “Who is that failure?” that “failure” isn't a failure at all, but a person who pushed him or herself to do his or her best. The fact that you tried automatically extracts yourself from making that choice to fail; however, instead, you succeeded.

You succeeded in trying and making the knowledgeable choice of not giving up. Similar to failure, determination is also a choice. These two do not necessarily get along; archenemies if you will. But we were given the gift of choice and can choose to fail or be determined. Determined to continue to move forward, dragging our past along with us. Think about when you were a child, remember when we would throw all of our greatest toys onto our favorite blanket and drag them around the house? Did those toys all stay on the blanket? Not in my case; my toys would slowly fall off and I would just keep going... by the time I got to my destination I had one toy left and that would be the toy I would play with. Think of life as that blanket... so much baggage is weighing down our lives, but if we push forward that baggage will slowly “fall” off of our blanket of life. No, we don’t forget about those things, just like as children we didn’t forget about those other toys... we just realized that they were in a completely different room and we didn’t want to go back and get them.

In the same way, that baggage left behind still happened, but we can learn to realize that those things happened in the past and belong in the past. We can learn to forgive ourselves and, again, continue to move forward. So, make the choice: Failure? or Determination?

Sorry, but I couldn’t let this be left unsaid.
